If you are to believe film history, women mostly function as plot devices, lust objects or support for strong male protagonists. It took a while before film caught up to reality, but in the two short film compilations themed around the female gaze, nothing remains of this outdated worldview. The filmmakers peel back the layers of a groundbreaking orange, rewrite familiar red-hooded fairy tales, and dig deep beneath the archeological surface. In the context of Europalia España there is an aditional Female Gaze programme featuring Spanish makers. Expect a programme that thoroughly challenges the average film's perspective.

Jean-Yves Machond, a world-renowned and generally unhappy painter, decides one day to change his life. He seeks inspiration in a small Normandy town, in order to create a masterpiece that will finally win him eternal fame and recognition. His encounter with the local artists, from the warm-hearted Bagnoule to the skilful Cécile, takes him off course, and brings him face to face with his deepest dream: simply to be a happy man.

Raging Bull

On reading their mother's will, Jeanne and Simon Marwan are given two envelopes: one for a father they thought dead and the other for a brother they never knew existed. Jeanne sees in this enigmatic bequest the key to her mother's silence, locked in an unexplained silence in the last weeks before her death. She immediately decides to travel to the Middle East to unearth the family's past, about which she knows almost nothing. As for Simon, he has no use for the posthumous whims of a mother who has always been distant. But his love for his twin sister will soon drive him to join Jeanne and travel with her through the land of their ancestors in search of a mother far removed from the one they knew.

The Churchill cinema is located in the centre of Liege, in a pedestrian area just a stone's throw from the Place Cathédrale.
