Do we belong to a place, or does the place belong to us? Like an unravelling skein, this question unravels the thread of the film's essay, passing through a series of relationships, from the link between Tzotzil women and nature, to a reflection on his own work as a documentary filmmaker.

After his mother's disappearance in a fire, eleven-year-old Mahito has to leave Tokyo to live in the countryside, in the village where his mother grew up. He moves in with his father in an old manor house on a huge estate. There, he meets a grey heron who gradually becomes his guide, helping him to understand the world around him and to unravel the mysteries of life.

In the wake of his mother's death and his father's remarriage, a headstrong boy ventures into a dreamlike world shared by the living and the dead in search of his missing stepmother.
