L’Olivier : qui sont les Palestiniens ?

Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers is one of the most urgent political films ever made, reconstructing the Algerian struggle for independence with the raw immediacy of a news report. The film follows both the FLN resistance and the repressive tactics of the French army, without simplifying the moral chaos of colonial war. With its restless camerawork, non-professional actors and unforgettable score by Ennio Morricone and Pontecorvo, it feels almost dangerously real. Decades later, The Battle of Algiers remains an explosive work about resistance, state violence and the images through which history is recorded.

The Battle of Algiers

Businessman Hirayama is very reluctant when he learns that his daughter Setsuko wants to marry a son-in-law he hadn't considered. She organizes the wedding without his help, and he attends against his will. The couple then leave for Hiroshima. Urged on by his friends, Hirayama overcomes his convictions and goes to visit them.

Higan-bana

61 years after his assassination, Patrice Lumumba returns to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Or, as one of his children put it, the Congo returns to the Congo. Lumumba was assassinated with two of his closest collaborators, at the height of the Cold War and during the wave of African independence. Only one tooth seems to have survived the acid treatment, carried out by a Belgian police officer. This film tells the story of the highly political celebrations for the return of Lumumba's remains, but above all seeks to find out what remains of Patrice Lumumba, in the Congo and in Belgium. So far, his murder and those of Okito and Mpolo have gone unpunished.
