Inspired by nine short stories and a poem by Raymond Carver, "Short Cuts" is a choral fresco exploring the intertwined lives of 22 characters in Los Angeles. Between family dramas, infidelities, accidents, and moments of grace, the film captures humanity in all its complexity, blending dark humor, tragedy, and poetry. The fates cross, influence, and echo each other, all against a backdrop of social tension and everyday coincidences.

Nine chapters feature everyday people navigating between cultural, religious and institutionally imposed constraints in contemporary Iran. These vivid stories, both humorous and poignant, show the vitality and determination of people in adversity, and are a nuanced portrait of a complex society.

Terrestrial Verses

Emad Burnat, a Palestinian farmer from Bil'in, bought his first camera in 2005 at the birth of his fourth son. What starts as an attempt to capture nice family memories, slowly changes into a powerful report of a personal and collective conflict when Israelian evictions strike his village. Burnat documents the tension between villagers and Israelian soldiers and shows the impact of the Israelian oppression on Burnat's family. While his family suffers under daily arrests and nightly raids, his cameras get damaged again and again through the violent outbursts around him. Despite threats and personal offers, he keeps filming. Burnat tells another part of his story with every new camera he purchases. 5 BROKEN CAMERAS is a poignant portrait of courage and perseverance in times of big crisis.
