On July 3, 1973, rock icon David Bowie surprised his fans and band by announcing that he would perform his last concert that night. Bowie would still perform, of course, but never again as Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker was in London to record a thirty-minute special of Bowie’s show but became so captivated by the performer that he decided on the spot to make a longer film.
