Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers is one of the most urgent political films ever made, reconstructing the Algerian struggle for independence with the raw immediacy of a news report. The film follows both the FLN resistance and the repressive tactics of the French army, without simplifying the moral chaos of colonial war. With its restless camerawork, non-professional actors and unforgettable score by Ennio Morricone and Pontecorvo, it feels almost dangerously real. Decades later, The Battle of Algiers remains an explosive work about resistance, state violence and the images through which history is recorded.

The Battle of Algiers

A young woman from a good family invites her parents to a dinner party to introduce them to her fiancé. Such is her surprise that she leaves her mother and father stunned when she arrives on the arm of a black man. In an America scarred by racism, Sidney Poitier plays the man of discord - an elegant, well-educated and charming man in more ways than one. One of the first films to tackle the issue of race relations with humor and subtlety, for the last of the Tracy-Hepburn couple.

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

When an alien is inadvertently left behind on earth, he finds refuge with a lonely youngster named Elliot. As Elliot and E.T. bond, it soon becomes clear that E.T. must find his way home before government officials capture him and experiment upon him. Together, E.T., Elliot and Elliot's family and friends help reunite E.T. with his spaceship.
