Xian is introverted, a loner and the only child in a broken family. Forced to spend the summer at her father's, she meets Mingmei, a precocious 18-year-old with a fiery temperament, and falls head over heels for her. A Song Sung Blue sets out the physiology of crushes, a small précis on the absoluteness of adolescent desire. It's lived out in a halo of sweet and morbid sensations, a cloud of unreal blue. The hour and a half of film captures the internal ebb and flow of attraction in a flash, categorical, non-negotiable desire peeled back to the pulp. We've certainly seen this before, in La Naissance des pieuvres for example, an ode to the star that draws everyone into its orbit, through the eyes of the heroine who desires it.
