The memories of her presence have since been lost in the fury of the civil wars, genocide and AIDS that ravaged Burundi and then Rwanda, precipitating his exile to Switzerland. Returning to Rwanda 30 years later, he ventures to reopen the pages of his family history by meeting those who knew his mother. Through his memory, the portrait of a whole generation of Rwandan women is revealed.
