Salvatore "Sal" Fragione is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighborhood local, Buggin' Out, becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria's Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin' Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin' Out and to other people in the neighborhood, and tensions rise.

This documentary essay is built around the idea of fault lines and the power of thought that allows us to live through and confront the traumas resulting from social violence. With this in mind, "La force diagonale" takes us on a philosophical journey, guided by the work of Hannah Arendt. Four portraits unspool, each exposing their own part in social violence, and their own ways of building a vital space and holding their own. Arendt's thinking is peppered with her own experiences, theoretical texts and excerpts from letters to close friends. Together, these constitute different aspects of the same journey. This thinking as an active force is embodied by dancer Claire Vivianne Sobottke in a choreography of restrained intensity. Shot on 16mm, in black and white, true to the aesthetic that characterizes the films of Annik Leroy, here in duo with Julie Morel, for a courageous film with a brutalist architecture that bears witness to an unstoppable force.

To the annoyance of her cat a kindly witch allows a dog, a bird and a frog who have helped her retrieve things she has lost to ride on her broomstick, making it top heavy. The broom is destroyed by a fire-breathing dragon who threatens to eat the witch but the creatures band together to impersonate a monster and save her. As a result she fashions a luxurious new broom with seats on which they can all ride comfortably.

Fallen Angels by Wong Kar-Wai is a hypnotic neo-noir that exposes the hidden lives in bustling Hong Kong. Wong Chi-ming, a jaded hitman, wants to leave his violent existence behind and flees the underworld on his motorcycle. The film interweaves stories of lonely souls who, like motorcyclists, seek freedom in a world that holds them captive.

With mesmerizing neon imagery and a jazzy soundtrack, Wong creates a visual and emotional experience. The motorcycles in the film symbolize the search for escape, while the melancholy of the city and its inhabitants penetrates deeply. Fallen Angels is a poignant portrait of lost souls in search of freedom.
