"This programme is full of departures and arrivals, as in an airport or a train station: people leaving and arriving in a new place, people returning and leaving a story behind. This programme is also permeated by the following question: how can we talk and listen from a distance?

Voices are expressed through text and image, audio recordings, names spoken like a distant rumour. These journeys in the programme's short films are not exempt from the weight of history that forces people to move: wars, colonial invasions. But neither are they exempt from the possibilities of a new life.

The journey begins with Wild Flowers (Karla Crnčević, 2023): the filmmaker left her hometown, and she returns to it through her work digitising images filmed by her father thirty years earlier, in the midst of the Croatian war. In Il rumore dell'universo (Gabriel Azorín, 2022), a young musician returns home after a tour. His return is accompanied by the last audio message from his girlfriend. A casa do norte (Inês Lima, 2021) transports us inside a house filled with flowers and canaries, but where the complex relationship between Portugal and Angola shines through in the dialogues, which no one utters, but which appear textually on the image. Finally, Noizko basoa (Mikele Landa, 2023) is the final destination. This short film takes place in the mountains of the Basque Country and then shows the view from an aeroplane about to land. It quickly moves from high altitudes to inland areas, where we see the roots of a tree.

The programme also talks about the experience of the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola school, which brings together people from different backgrounds who have left their homeland to settle in the mountains of Donosti." (José Emilio González Calvillo)

Hậu lives with her grandchildren in a Vietnamese village, following the rhythm of the surrounding forest. She gathers plants, prepares remedies, and repeats gestures learned and passed down orally. Trương Minh Quý and Nicolas Graux observe her daily life, paying close attention to textures and sounds. Shot on 16 mm film, Hair, Paper, Water... brings to life a world that one might think had disappeared, where knowledge is passed on through repetition and listening. As the film progresses, words appear on the screen: fragments of the Rục language, now endangered, punctuate Hậu's daily life and give rhythm to the viewer's gaze. Through its attention to gestures, dreams and elements, the film paints a portrait of great delicacy. On the outskirts of Barcelona, Vallbona is an enclave bordered by a river, railway tracks, and a highway. Antonio, the son of Catalan workers, has been growing flowers here for nearly 90 years. He’s been joined by Makome, Norma, Tatiana, coming from everywhere… To the rhythm of music, forbidden swims, and budding romances, a poetic form of resistance emerges against the urban, social, and identity conflicts of the world.

Denny is the new owner of a small plot of land in a remote valley in Georgia, on the border with Chechnya, from which he has been exiled since childhood. He arrives there and plans to build a house that contrasts sharply with local customs. It is a fantasy that revives his memories and those of his uprooted clan, who dream of only one thing: getting him married!

Guinaw-Rails, a working-class neighbourhood on the outskirts of Dakar where Mamadou Khouma Gueye grew up, is disappearing to make way for the Regional Express Train. Between the noise of the machines and everyday life, the film observes how spaces are transformed and how lives are affected. Far from the official narrative accompanying the project, the director films his mother, deeply rooted in the neighbourhood, forced to leave her home. A former political activist, now weakened by illness and fatigue, she nevertheless reveals great strength and lucidity. By filming what Guinaw-Rails was and what it is becoming, the director also reveals a deep connection with his mother. The film creates a dialogue between urban transformation and family history, and shows the concrete and destructive impact of political decisions on the lives and memory of a neighbourhood that is disappearing. - Annagrazia Graduato

Every year, the ‘Résidence point de vue - point d'écoute’ invites an image artist (filming on film) and a sound artist to collaborate on a film on a given theme. For this 4th edition, the starting point for the joint work was the traces of Belgian colonisation in the Matongé district of Brussels.

Three MiniDV tapes of life in Gaza from 2001 were recently rediscovered. This footage is now a testament to a place and time that no longer exists. What started as a search for a former prison mate from 1989—a man lost to time and war— led to an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown. As the camera moves through Gaza’s streets and landscapes, it records fleeting moments of everyday life—fragments of a reality now irreversibly altered. With Hasan in Gaza transforms this forgotten footage into a cinematic reflection on memory, loss and the passage of time, capturing a Gaza of the past and lives that may never be found again.

Ciné4 opened in 2020 right in the centre of Nivelles, close to the Grand Place. On its two screens you can discover both the best auteur cinema and a selection of movies for the whole family. On top of that you get a very warm welcome and the best possible screening conditions.
