Lilya 4-ever

Directed by
Lukas Moodysson
Duration
109 min.
Year
2002

After striking a slightly ironic tone in Together (2000), Lukas Moodysson surprised audiences with Lilya 4-ever, centered on the trials and tribulations sixteen-year-old Lilya must endure. When her mother departs for America with a new boyfriend, Lilya, impressively portrayed by Russian Oksana Akinshina, is left bewildered and destitute in Estonia. She pins her hopes on sweet-talking Andrei. A bright future awaits the two in Sweden, Andrej prophesies. Not much later, Lilja ends up there as a sex worker, with no passport and no hope. Vivaldi, trash metal and techno are the soundtrack to her suffering. Winner of, among others, the Canal+ Award of the Swedish Film Festival and prize for Best Film of the Gijón International Film Festival 2002.
